Per National Weather Service, the line of severe thunderstorms is now expected to reach the Potomac Highlands between 8:30 and 9PM, and the D.C. area around 9:30PM. There also may be pop-up thunderstorms which develop ahead of the main line of storms. This line of storms has a history of producing major wind damage across West Virginia and Ohio due to wind gusts over 75MPH. Cloud to ground lightning has also been prolific in these storms. All government officials and first responders should prepare for the possibility that an extensive response will be required.

[NSCoderNightDC] NSCoder Night, CocoaConf Edition

Continuing in our long standing tradition of innovation and last minute reminders, I'd like to bring to your attention that we will be holding a special NSCoder Night meeting tonight as a part of CocoaConf. CocoaConf just kicked off it's iOS Tutorial session today. Tomorrow they will start the main presentation portion of the conference. Tonight after the iOS Tutorial is done, we will have an NSCoder Meeting. That will run from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. It will be held in the same hotel as the conference itself (Crowne Plaza Dulles. 2200 Centreville Rd, Herndon, VA 20170)

So if you have the time and are in the area, especially if you have been interested in a Herndon/Reston area NSCoder Night, do swing by tonight. I'm hoping we might get a chance to talk about starting a new group in the area if there is enough interest.

Jose

[NSCoderNightDC] Academic research study - help needed

Hello,

My name is Toni Ferro, and I'm a grad student in the Department of Human Centered Design and Engineering at the University of Washington. I am in a research group that is gathering information on how advanced high tech users (like the members of the NSCoderNightDC group) use publicly available online services (think Basecamp, Google docs, etc.). We ran the survey the last four years with other groups and got great feedback. I've been really impressed with this groups discussions and general activity, and would love see more about how the members are using technology in their work life.

Would you be willing to post a brief recruiting message and the survey URL to the group? I sent a message earlier in the week as well (below).

Either way, let me know if you think this would be suitable to put to the group members. I'm also happy to answer any additional questions.

Thanks for your time!

Toni

-------------------------------------

Hey everyone,

I am hoping it is OK to post this kind of thing to this group.  I'm a student working on some research about how (or if) people use Internet-based applications like Google Docs and Basecamp, etc. for work.  This group seems like it would be a good group to complete a survey my research group has created. The survey is completely anonymous and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. Your contribution would mean a lot to my research group.

https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/commprac/172284

There isn't a lot of data out there on how people are using Internet-based applications in the work world. We're focusing on tech-savvy populations to see if we can provide baseline information about how applications like these are being used in the professional world. If you can spare a few minutes to fill this out, it would really be beneficial to us. We are asking groups like this one from all over the country to help us out. Feel free to send me any questions about the group or the survey.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerely, Toni Ferro UW grad student

Pivots

Pivots

In this article we will discuss about a widespread, well-known key element of technical analysis. Why do you think technical analysis especially some elements work so well for financial markets? Why do you think Fibonacci levels are usually strictly followed? Because thousands and billions of traders and computer programs for trading use these elements. This way everybody acts the same at the same time…

This is why we decided to present in the category of technical analysis, the most used and well-known methods of predicting financial evolution. These methods are easy to understand and are very efficient.

We will discuss about pivots. We will find out what pivots are and how they are calculated. We will use them in our charts and we will see how they act. We will discover how useful they are and, at the end, we will draw the conclusions.

We will use pivots daily in our analyzing and trading system.

Do moon phases influence financial markets?

Do moon phases influence financial markets?

We will tell you what moon phase means and what new moon and full moon is.

We will find out when these events happened last year. We will analyze each graphic and understand the influence these moon phases have on the evolution of the market. Finally we will draw some conclusions to help us make financial predictions.

What full moon and new moon is?

A lunar phase is in fact the appearance of the illuminated part of the Moon as seen from the Earth. The lunar phase varies as the moon orbits the Earth accordingly to the positions of the Moon, Earth and Sun related to each other.

Every 28 days the Moon comes between the Sun and Earth. This means that the Moon is in conjunction with the Sun. At this specific moment the Moon is not visible to the eye, but the original meaning of "New Moon" refers to the first visible crescent of the Moon after conjunction. The Moon can be now seen over the western horizon and each night, the illuminated part gets bigger until, after 14 days, almost a whole hemisphere of the Moon can be seen. This is in fact the moment of the Full Moon. The Moon is now on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun. This means that the Moon is in opposition with the Sun. The Full Moon rises over the horizon after the sunset. During the next 14 days the illuminated part decreases until the Moon is again in conjunction with the Sun (the next New Moon). The exact time for the Full Moon and the New Moon is determined using a mathematical formula and can be found in the ephemerides.

[wapadc] Photos needed for NAPA website

Hi folks:

If you have seen the NAPA website in the past year or so you'll agree that there is a desperate need for good photos of "anthros at work." If you have any good photos you would like to share for use on the NAPA site please let me know. Ideally these would already be in electronic format but I can scan slides or prints if needed.

The photos will be used on the NAPA home page and interior pages. Ideally they would also have some kind of model release already signed but we can figure out that part in due course. You don't have to be a NAPA member to send in photos.

Thanks and I look forward to any thoughts, ideas, suggestions and of course photos!

Have a lovely summer,
terry redding

HOUSING REQUESTS

Looking for a roommate….

·         Hui Hung (ND '10) is moving to DC in July and is looking for a roommate.  She is looking for a female to join in on a 2 bed, 2 bath unit and to share a room with.  Email hui@alumni.nd.edu if you are interested.

·         Four women (including an ND alum) are looking for one or two  housemates in Arlington. Our large town home is located a short walk  from the Courthouse and Clarendon metros, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's,  restaurants, shopping in downtown Clarendon and is a short drive to  St. Agnes. The townhouse is only a few years old and is gorgeous!  There are four floors, three and a half bathrooms, a large kitchen  with granite counter tops, washer and dryer,  pool and concierge that receives packages and provides 24-hour  maintenance.  The open room is the master suite and is the entire  second floor. It has a large walk-in closet and a very spacious  bathroom (two sinks, separate washroom, granite countertops, large  Jacuzzi tub and separate walk-in shower).  We like to entertain and  are very easy going. The rent for the master suite is $1,850.00  ($925/person if shared) a month plus approximately $80/person/month  for cleaning and utilities (we all pitch in on a cleaning service),  and $85-$100 for underground parking (parking is optional but street  parking is limited and first come first served). The room is officially available on the 27th of August but possibly as early as  the first of August. Please contact Meg Miller at  miller.meg9@gmail.com.

Our building:
http://www.equityapartments.com/virginia/alexandria-arlington-apartments/clarendon/vista-on-courthouse-apartments.aspx

·         Brian Kremzier (ND '12) is moving to DC this summer and is looking for a roommate.  He will be working in DC starting at the beginning of July, and is looking to live in northwest DC or Arlington.  Email bkremzie@alumni.nd.edu if you are interested.

·         Kate Sullivan (ND '10) is moving to DC to start grad school at GW in August and is looking for an apartment and/or roommate(s). She is open to neighborhoods in DC or Arlington as long as it's near a Metro stop. She'd love to room with some fellow ND alums! If you've got any interest or leads please email kaitlin.r.sullivan@gmail.com.

·         Melissa Braganza (ND '10) is moving to D.C./MD in early/mid-July. She is looking for a roommate or housing situation and is open to living in NW D.C./Bethesda/Rockville. Email Melissa at mbraganz@gmail.com.

Looking for permanent housing

·         Nick LaPlante (Class of 2011) is looking for a room to lease in the H Street/Capitol Hill/Eastern Market area, preferably near Union Station, as he will be commuting via MARC to work at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.  Ideally, the room would be available sometime in July or early August. Please contact Nick if you have any leads/interest: nicholasrvlaplante@gmail.com

·         Julie Bujnowski is an ND Arkie moving to DC.  Julie and another Arkie are looking for a two bedroom, one bath place in Columbia Heights or NOMA, preferably not in a large apartment complex. Their commute will be on the red line so we'll need access to the metro. They're trying to find places that are 2400 or less. Email jbujnows@nd.edu with any leads.

·         Brenna Williams is a new member of the ND alum family! She's looking for a place to live really anywhere in the area (although NoVa in the Arlington/Alexandria area would be ideal), and would like to move in ASAP - so if someone is in a pinch and needs a roommate, she's your girl! She's willing to pay up to $1100 and really just needs a place near the metro with parking that doesn't require a DC parking permit. More info upon request! Email:williamsbrennac@gmail.com or bwillia9@alumni.nd.edu.

Looking for temporary housing…

·         My name is Kyle Clark, and I graduated from ND this past Sunday with a degree in political science. I am moving to DC in a few days, and as of about 10 minutes ago, I have a house locked down. The only thing is that the lease doesn't start till July 1. I am wondering if you or any of the club members know of any properties that sublet on a month-by-month basis. I'd need it from May 29 to June 30. My price range would probably be $500 or less--I know that could be restrictive but I'm trying to cut costs as much as I can until I get on my feet!  Email Kyle - kclark14@alumni.nd.edu.

·         Joel VanderWeele and his wife are looking for temporary housing in D.C. this summer.  Joel is an architecture graduate student interning at David M. Schwarz Architects this summer and she will be working at the literacy non-profit called 826DC in Columbia Heights.  They're looking to spend around $1200/month and would prefer to live in an apartment somewhere close to the city, but are open to other options (just renting a room, going a little ways outside of the city, slightly more expensive, etc.).  They are currently overseas, but we're looking to move in the end of May/beginning of June and move out the first weekend in August.  Email Joel at jvander3@nd.edu.

·         Jessica Stoller-Conrad will be interning for NPR this summer from June to Mid-August.  She's looking for affordable, metro/bus-accessible housing (Mount Pleasant, Columbia Heights, Georgia Ave/Petworth areas).  Email Jessica at jstolle1@nd.edu.

·         Theresa Cattuna is moving to DC in August and is looking for housing in/around Reston or Tyson's corner.  She's looking for affordable housing and is open to one or more roommates. Contact Theresa attcattuna@gmail.com.

·         Sarah Lovejoy is a ND sophomore who will be interning in DC this summer through the Kellogg Institute.  She's looking for a sublet from May 20 to July 29th and will be working near the Brookland-CUA station.  Any leads?  Email Sarah at slovejoy@nd.edu

[tfctoastmasters:416] June 20th TFC Toastmasters Meeting Agenda

Hello Toastmasters,
The agenda for tomorrow night's special meeting is attached. We will have a potluck celebration of the club's 5-year anniversary and hold officer elections. Contributions for the potluck are welcome along the fruit/vegetable or non-sweet side of the food chart.  Thank you kindly in advance.

Our meeting begins at 6:45pm and is located at the AED building at 1875 Connecticut Avenue. Please try to arrive by 6:40pm to ensure that we start and end on time. If you have a role and are running late, please be sure to text me at 202-821-8074 so we can plan accordingly.

AED is located approximately 3 blocks from the Dupont Circle Metro (red line), North exit on the right. You can also take the 42 Bus heading north from Metro Center. If you need to park, there are normally metered spots in front of AED on Connecticut available, as well as some spots on T Street.  AED has two entrances (1825 & 1875) and we need to enter through the 1875 entrance. The doors will be locked, so we will meet in the lobby before the meeting.  If you come after the start of the meeting, the building guard will let you inside. Please give the guard your name and he or she will let you up to the meeting on the 12th Floor at the American Public Power Association's main conference room.

Cheers,

[NSCoderNightDC] We're back!

Are you:

a) Motivated beyond belief after seeing all the wonderful new APIs from Apple and feel energized from the community?
b) Drooling over the new MacBook Pro with Retina graphics and can't wait to get your hands on one?
c) Depressed beyond all hope that you are still using an iPhone 3GS and can not possibly afford the new MBP:TNG? (I'm sure nobody feels like that, why would I even bother with such a silly option)
d) Bitter about Apple further shoving their agenda over small indies, Now taking over maps, allowing third parties to implement routing apps only to Sherlock them later?
e) Glad to see that Apple pulled off a sweet WWDC chock full of goodies even in Steve Job's absence. The future indeed looks promising.
f) Blatantly misguided and want an MS Surface device as soon as it's available.

If you answered anything at all (seriously? you took the time to read all that nonsense?) then you should come and meet us at tonights NSCoder Night DC:Post WWDC 2012 Edition!

As per usual, we will be meeting at La Madeleine in Bethesda around 7:00pm (OK, I confess... I'll be way late... my wife will be at work until 7:00 and I need to babysit until then, grumble, grumble) We will be there until they kick us out sometime after 10:00.

and One More Thing, at 9:00pm we'll be having new Pastries with Retina Display. Such high resolution calories, you can't see them with the naked eye.

Hope to see you there tonight,
Jose

July Book Choices

Good evening Book Club,

Our next meeting will be held on Monday, July 16, 2012 at 7:00 pm. Our
book theme for the month of July is humor/ satire. There are so many
great books that fall into this category; however it is often
difficult to find a sufficient number of copies for any one title.
After narrowing the (large!) list of books to only those with more
than 8 available copies, I was left with 3. Some of these books are by
authors this club has read in the past or have been offered before and
not chosen.
Here they are in no particular order:

Fool by Christopher Moore

A man of infinite jest, Pocket has been Lear's cherished fool for
years, from the time the king's grown daughters - selfish, scheming
Goneril, sadistic but hot Regan, and sweet, loyal Cordelia - were mere
girls. So he can see trouble brewing when Lear demands that his kids
swear their undying love and devotion before a collection of assembled
guests. Of course Goneril and Regan are only too happy to brownnose
Dad. But Cordelia's blunt honesty ends up costing her her rightful
share of the kingdom and earns her a banishment to boot. The only
person who can possibly make things right is Pocket, who has already
managed to sidestep catastrophe on numerous occasions, using his razor-
sharp mind, rapier wit and the equally well-honed daggers he keeps
conveniently hidden behind his back. He's going to have to do some
very fancy maneuvering - cast some spells, incite a few
assassinations, start a war or two (the usual stuff) - and shag every
lusciously shaggable wench who's amenable along the way. Pocket may be
a fool ...but he's definitely not an idiot.

Super Sad True Love Story by Gary Shteyngart

In the near future, America is crushed by a financial crisis and our
patient Chinese creditors may just be ready to foreclose on the whole
mess. Then Lenny Abramov, son of an Russian immigrant janitor and
ardent fan of "printed, bound media artifacts" (aka books), meets
Eunice Park, an impossibly cute Korean American woman with a major in
Images and a minor in Assertiveness. Could falling in love redeem a
planet falling apart?

The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga
From The New Yorker

In this darkly comic début novel set in India, Balram, a chauffeur,
murders his employer, justifying his crime as the act of a "social
entrepreneur." In a series of letters to the Premier of China, in
anticipation of the leader's upcoming visit to Balram's homeland, the
chauffeur recounts his transformation from an honest, hardworking boy
growing up in "the Darkness"—those areas of rural India where
education and electricity are equally scarce, and where villagers
banter about local elections "like eunuchs discussing the Kama Sutra"—
to a determined killer. He places the blame for his rage squarely on
the avarice of the Indian élite, among whom bribes are commonplace,
and who perpetuate a system in which many are sacrificed to the whims
of a few. Adiga's message isn't subtle or novel, but Balram's
appealingly sardonic voice and acute observations of the social order
are both winning and unsettling.

Please send a message with your top choice by 8:00 pm on Wednesday
(6/20) so I can begin putting holds on the items for the club.

Thanks!
Elsbeth

Looking for a roommate….

·                 Brian Kremzier (ND '12) is moving to DC this summer and is looking for a roommate.  He will be working in DC starting at the beginning of July, and is looking to live in northwest DC or Arlington.  Email bkremzie@alumni.nd.edu if you are interested.
